Choose the Right Contractor

Make sure the contractor is licensed, insured, and can provide you with a list of customer references.

Insist on a written contract detailing the work to be performed, materials to be used, starting dates, deadlines, jobsite clean-up details, and any other pertinent information.

If an estimate seems too low, consider what might have been omitted or what short cuts might be taken.

Ask for references. Previous clients will tell you a lot about a contractor's experience and professionalism.

If the salesman has to call his manager to get approval for a "special deal", beware.

Beware of the "today only" deals -if the offer is not good 2 weeks from today, something is amiss.

Beware of Retail Chain contractors or Telemarketing Contractors, who typically use outside contractors to perform the labor and charge double or triple what is considered fair market pricing.

"Buy One, Get One Free" type offers are used as a tool to get in your home. Actual costs may be much higher than what is normally charged by contractors who do not use such gimmicks.

Finally, never allow anyone to pressure you into accepting their proposal. After all, it's your decision - not theirs.
